H-E-B stores across North Texas

  • August 15, 2026

After years of anticipation, H-E-B opened a namesake grocery store in west Frisco in 2022, the first among North Texas’ most densely populated counties.

The San Antonio-based chain got its start in Kerrville in 1905, later taking its name from the initials of Howard Edward Butt, son of its founder, Florence Thornton Butt.

Since then, it has become the dominant regional grocer, opening hundreds of stores statewide and in Mexico. In the last few decades, it amassed a sizable portfolio of undeveloped North Texas real estate, prompting residents to begin asking when the area would get a “regular” H-E-B.

When it finally happened, 1,500 people lined up at the door on opening day.

The retailer, known as one of the industry’s best, challenges dominant grocers Walmart and Kroger in a field that includes more than a dozen other chains. H-E-B’s local store brands also include the upscale Central Market, which entered D-FW in 2001, and Joe V’s Smart Shop that opened here in 2025.

Throughout its operations, H-E-B claims more than 175,000 employees, many of whom are in D-FW. Its founding family still controls the company.

The Dallas Morning News has kept track along the way. Of stores open and stores planned. Of land acquired and rezoned. Of amenities and features and specialties. All of those can be found in the interactive maps and list below. This page will be updated as new stores open or there are other developments in H-E-B’s growth in North Texas.
