While a number of Valley cities are ending their contracts with the Flock Group over misuse of the automatic license plate reader camera systems, Scottsdale leaders seem to have mixed feelings about it.
The Scottsdale Police Department audits its system four times per year with every search recorded and time-stamped, allowing the department to review who conducted a search, when it occurred and the documented law-enforcement purpose associated with it, according to a fact sheet about the department’s Flock system created by the Scottsdale Police Department.
“Single-use searches are individually validated against law-enforcement records,” the fact sheet says. “Anomalies identified and presented through the audit process are entered into the department’s Internal Affairs system, and every anomaly is investigated by Internal Affairs and the employee’s supervisor. The department also audits a percentage of active hot list entries to confirm that each is connected to a legitimate law-enforcement purpose.”
