1 dead, 4 injured after shooting at large gathering in South Acres

  • August 17, 2026

HOUSTON – One man was killed and four others were injured after a shooting broke out during a large gathering in southeast Houston early Sunday.

Houston police responded around 4 a.m. to the 13300 block of Cullen Boulevard.

Investigators said the incident followed a gathering at a shopping center, where people had been playing pool and smoking hookah. Someone had rented out the Chevron Center, as locals call it, though there’s no signage out front.

“It’s very weird it’s unlabeled,” Houston Police Department Detective Alex Vinogradov said.

He tells KPRC 2 News, as attendees were leaving, an altercation began. A suspect then allegedly opened fire into the crowd, prompting return fire from multiple people.

Detective Vinogradov said an SUV was leaving the area and made a U-turn on Cullen Boulevard, passing the shopping center on the opposite side of the street. Someone inside the vehicle then fired into the crowd, prompting people nearby to shoot back at the SUV.

In HPD’s preliminary reports, officers said they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department crews transported both to a hospital, where one was pronounced dead.

HPD identified three other victims who transported themselves to the hospital. Two were shot, and one was beaten.

Detectives said they expect the four surviving victims to recover.

“There was a private security guard that used to be here to prevent private gatherings like this from happening” said Vinogradov. “Since the guard hasn’t been working, gatherings like this has been happening more often.”

HPD said they are still searching for a suspect.

Anyone with information should contact HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, where you can report anonymously.
