Netflix has set October 15 for the Season 4 premiere of The Diplomat. The streamer also released the first trailer and several first-look photos for the upcoming season, where clearly marital tension abounds.

“I’m not trying to get out of the marriage, I’m trying to get back in …”, says Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler at the beginning of the teaser. “We do high highs and really low lows. The fights are gonna be spicy.”

“You can’t keep doing this to me,” says a distraught Hal (Rufus Sewell).

The new season picks up after the cliffhanger ending in the Season 3 finale with Kate finding discovering her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler, and President Grace Penn secretly stole a Russian nuclear weapon. Kate furiously tells Hal when the Brits and Russia find out the U.S. stole the weapon, both nations will consider it an act of war. The last scene cuts to black just as Hal calls President Penn to warn her, “She knows.”

Per the official logline: In Season 4, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

In addition to Russell and Sewell, Allison Janney stars as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn. Also starring Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah.

From creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn, The Diplomat is a high-stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people. It centers on Kate Wyler (Russell), the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home … less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to defuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Sewell).

Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Keri Russell, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie are executive producers.
