Mural unveiling
An unveiling ceremony for a new public mural near the Nordahl Road Sprinter Station will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 29. The mural honors Escondido’s agricutural heritage and pays tribute to its growth as a city. The lerge-scale artwork was created by professional artists Sasha Primo and Gloria Favela Rocha, in collaboration with local youth groups and urban creators from the city of Escondido, with support from the Escondido Community Foundation and the California Center for the Arts. The mural includes symbols of the area, such as citrus groves and vineyards, local wildlife, Lake Hodges Dam and the creek along with vintage pickup trucks and classic cars. The artwork is part of Escondido Community Foundation’s Artspeaks program that brings community-centered artwork to public spaces throughout Escondido. Two North County cancer centers received a delivery of blankets and care packages from AutoNation Subaru Carlsbad and Blood Cancer United (formerly the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). Scripps Cancer Center locations in Encinitas and Oceanside received the donations for their patients, as part of the Subaru Loves to Care program, which focuses on bringing “warmth, support and encouragement” to patients facing challenging health circumstances. The annual Taste of Old Town is from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 10 throughout Historic Old Town San Diego. General admission is $40 for sample bites from all participating restaurants, VIP is $55 for food tastings plus a specially crafted cocktail or tequila tasting at participating locations. High school opens museum
Patrick Henry High School’s new history museum in the campus library welcomes visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 27 at the 6702 Wandermere Dr. The museum features displays about various aspects of student life during the first decade of Patrick Henry High School in the 1960s to 1970s. Yearbooks, issues of campus newspapers, theatre programs, photographs, and uniforms of band, cheerleader and sports team will be showcased. Classroom study guides and student workbooks will also be on display. The memorabilia were collected in 2023 when a number of alumni began production of a history film about Patrick Henry’s first years, according to museum founding archivist Scott Aveldson. A number of alumni went on to become stars in professional sports and show business, and the museum was able to acquire signed photos, DVDs, trading cards and bobbleheads from their careers. The event coincides with the Fall Open House for parents and students which kicks off the school’s 58th year. Admission to the museum event is free. San Diego County’s annual Unclaimed Monies Claim Period runs through Oct. 11 and residents are encouraged to see if money belonging to them is waiting to be claimed. This year’s Unclaimed Monies Program includes more than $1 million owed to 2,200 potential claimants, including individuals, businesses, nonprofits and other organizations, according to the San Diego Treasurer-Tax Collector. Folk rock fusion band performs
The Electrocarpathians, an East European folk rock fusion band, will give a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 8778 Cottonwood Ave. The group formed in 1988 to advance the fusion of East European styles such as klezmer, polka and czardas with classic rock and Latin music. The band performed regularly at the Better Worlde Galeria until that venue closed in 1995. Their first album, Umpires of Straw, released in 2001 by Global Village Music, was subtitled Slavic Music Collected in the Midwest Performed by California Surfer Gypsy Punk Rockers. Their second release, Fighting for Harmony (2008), was inspired by a search for Byzantine roots in dance music originating in Southern California and Tijuana. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $20 at the door.
