Three people were killed in a shooting Monday morning at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno when a man shot five people in the valet area outside the hotel-casino and another person who was driving through the parking lot.

One victim died in the valet area. Another was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center, where they died. The driver shot in the parking lot also died on scene.

Two victims and the shooter were in critical condition Monday afternoon, police said. One victim was treated and released.

“I want to start with my deepest condolences to the victims and their families, as well as to our entire community,” Reno police chief Kathryn Nance said at a press conference Monday afternoon. “Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure.”

Police have not identified the suspect or victims.

The Sparks Police Department reported the motive of the shooter is still unknown and under investigation.

“At this time, we have no reason to believe there is a connection between the suspect and victims,” police said in a statement Monday.

Sparks police will lead the investigation with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Grand Sierra Resort shooting sequence of events

Shortly before 7:25 Monday, an unidentified man walked up to the valet area outside the casino-hotel in east Reno and pointed a handgun at a group of people. After the gun initially jammed, the suspect was able to fire multiple times, shooting five people.

One died at the scene and one was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center.

The suspect then went north through the parking lot, where a GSR security officer confronted him and they exchanged gunfire.

Continuing north, the suspect fatally shot a person who was driving through the parking lot.

Reno police arrived around 7:25 a.m. and located the suspect on the northwest side of the property. The suspect fired at an officer’s vehicle, and multiple officers returned fire.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Two of the victims were also in critical condition, police said.

Nance said police’s rapid response prevented the shooter from taking more victims’ lives. One officer sustained minor injuries, most likely due to glass fragments.

Police said he had several magazines of ammunition for the gun.

“Please tell your family, your loved ones, your friends that you love them everyday because life can be very unpredictable,” Mayor Hillary Schieve said at the news conference.
