Two cyclists were killed in separate hit-and-run crashes in New York City this week, according to police.
In the Bronx, 51-year-old Angelo Camara was riding his bike home from work Tuesday night when he was struck by a BMW, police said.
Family members said Camara, who worked as a mechanic, typically rode the same route home but took a different route on Tuesday.
According to police, a 2018 BMW sedan was traveling east on Bruckner Boulevard when the driver ran a red light at Lockwood Avenue and struck Camara.
Camara was taken to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
“It’s not a safe place to cross the street,” Chris Roundtree, a Bronx resident, said. “Whoever hit those people last night they weren’t paying attention. The onus is on the driver.”
Police said the BMW went on to strike two parked cars before continuing east and hitting another vehicle stopped at a red light. The 37-year-old woman driving that car was injured and taken to a hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the BMW did not remain at the scene, authorities said.
Family and friends have created a makeshift memorial near the crash site, while another memorial was set up outside the auto shop where Camara worked.
“He meant a lot to the community. He was a mechanic, he was a father, a brother, a friend, whatever you need he was there,” Camara’s brother-in-law, Angel Martinez, said.
Martinez urged the driver to turn themselves in.
“If you keep running, it’s gonna make matters even worse,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, 29-year-old Paulina Tec Choc, of Queens, was also fatally struck while riding an e-bike early Tuesday, according to police.
That crash happened at Jamaica Avenue and Cypress Hills Street in the Cypress Hills neighborhood. Police said the driver of the pickup truck involved fled the scene.
Transportation Alternatives, a nonprofit focused on street safety, said 16 cyclists have been killed in New York City so far this year.
Police have not announced any arrests, and said both investigations remain ongoing.
