Texas’ favorite homegrown grocery store has been quietly rolling out swanky new features this year. Without any kind of big announcement or widespread rollout, select stores can now get a fresh drink delivered to their driver’s-side window to sip on the way home from your curbside pickup.
H-E-B began a new concept in a very small number of stores. Now, some shoppers can text a six-character code while they wait for their grocery run to be loaded into the trunk, and have an H-E-B brand bevvy (sans alcohol, obviously) brought curbside.
But don’t get your hopes up. This is apparently a hush-hush operation being tested in very few stores. In fact, the only one we could find evidence of was in Brownsville.
“Right now, this is a very limited concept we’re testing at a few locations,” an H-E-B spokesperson told MySA. “[There are] no plans to expand available assortment or to other locations.”
If you’re wondering what they meant by “assortment,” MySA absolutely asked whether this could mean a True Texas BBQ, True Texas Tacos, or South Flo Pizza (the good stuff) order could arrive at your window while you wait anytime soon. We were dreaming big, but those hopes were quickly dashed for the immediate future.
And we clearly weren’t alone in this wish. In a post by Yannett V. Garcia, who was among the first to spot this car-side beverage option in Brownsville, people were quick to share similar sentiments.
“How about a rotisserie chicken or tamales for the win. Or those croissant donuts,” Misty Lee said.
This also isn’t the first new curbside feature quietly tested out by H-E-B. Earlier this year, a new feature hit mobile apps allowing curbside shoppers to notify crews they were on the way for pickup. For anyone who hasn’t tried it out, it’s a game-changer for wait times.
