Lauralee Bell has been part of The Young and the Restless since she was a teenager in the 1980s, and she still loves it and is sometimes surprised by her character’s stories. She was especially delighted when she read a recent script where her character, Christine “Cricket” Blair Romalotti, joins Nina Webster and Traci Abbott at The Shadow Room for a girls’ night out. Sitting down to talk about the episode that originally aired on August 20 and is now available to stream on Paramount+, she was still lit up about it.
“It was this little gift,” Bell said of the script. “That one was a shocker when I got the script. I was thrilled to work with two of my favorite people.” The timing made the surprise even more special, since Tricia Cast had been away from Genoa City since Christine and Danny’s wedding, and Beth Maitland’s Traci had spent months buried in Abbott family crises.
“What made these scenes even more fun was that the idea came from our executive producer, Sally McDonald. We’ve all enjoyed working with her for decades and she has a history with the show and our characters and that really comes across as organic and authentic,” Bell added.
‘The Young and the Restless’ spoilers: Inside Thursday’s Shadow Room drink menu scene

The episode sounds like so much fun. “We’re trying out the new drink menu at this new club,” Bell explained, and here’s how it plays out. Tricia Cast returns as Nina and turns up at The Shadow Room to surprise her old friends, and Bell shares the setup that gets everyone to the table. “There are five different drinks on the drink menu, and I invite Traci over and say, ‘You know, we have this very important task,'” Bell previewed. “We have to take on this really important task of trying all the drinks and rating them.”
Traci needs no convincing whatsoever. “Nina comes up behind her and says, well, I’m up for it too,” Bell described, which is the moment a two-hander becomes something considerably more fun.

Cricket, Nina, and Traci have always been among my very favorite characters, and like many fans, I am looking forward to seeing the three of them let loose together. “It’s a lot of very quick banter as we reminisce over so many things,” Bell described. The callbacks come one after another, starting with the era “when Danny and Traci used to sing,” which is nostalgic for many viewers, and the two characters were briefly married back in 1985. There’s a reference to Nina’s activism at the concerts, too. “During Danny’s concerts, once Nina made a speech about social issues, talking against drinking and driving,” Bell said.
Then there’s the hair. “We teased Danny’s mullet, because he’s got a picture up in his new Shadow Room,” Bell revealed. “It’s right behind me. Nina’s sort of staring at me, and I ask, what? She says, ‘Look behind you.’ And I reply, ‘Yeah, I know,'” Bell recounted. The payoff arrives as a tribute to everything Danny has given up for love. “Danny’s made a lot of sacrifices for love, and thank God the mullet was one of them,” she joked.
“I think it’s fun for viewers, too. We’re talking about stuff that goes 30 years back, and for a lot of the viewers, they know what we’re talking about. And that’s really fun to know,” she said. “The lifers, the fans that have been with the show, will understand all of our inside jokes.”

The scene’s one real friction point involves a man Christine has never heard about. “Nina’s starting to say there’s this new guy,” Bell explained, and Christine’s response is calibrated to sound casual while being anything but. “I think my line was very nonchalant,” Bell said, before running through what’s happening underneath it. “How would she have this guy back there? And I know nothing about… why isn’t she calling me? I’m her bestie. And I know nothing about this.”
That instinct was protected on purpose. “We just wanted to make it real that there’s no way Nina would be keeping some romantic possibility to herself,” Bell said. Distance complicates it, since Nina lives elsewhere now, but a couple of drinks in, Cricket lets the hurt surface. “She was a little annoyed,” Bell acknowledged, and she doesn’t blame the character one bit.

When I asked if there was some improvisation among the actors for the girls’ night out, Bell said they honored the page. “We pretty much stuck to it,” Bell said, and the joy was palpable. “I’m sure we were more giggly than they had envisioned.”
Nina’s previous appearance had been a toast at Christine and Danny’s reception, and this time she got the call and simply showed up. “She just gets the call, comes in, 100%, Nina,” Bell said with admiration, adding the detail that impresses her most. “She remembered every line.” The nerves are always there beforehand, because it’s been a year or more between visits, and they never once show. “She’s such a pro,” Bell added.
The joy carried past wrap. “On my drive home, I was smiling so much. I can’t believe that was work. That was just really fun,” Bell shared, being sure to clarify that the three women started texting each other once everyone got home as they all marveled about their fun day together. It reads on camera, too, in a way that can’t be faked. “People stand next to each other awkwardly when they don’t know each other well,” Bell observed, contrasting that with three women who touch each other’s arms without thinking about it. Her summary of the dynamic was simple: “I’ve known you my whole life.”
Thursday’s episode also plants a seed for what fans hope comes next, too. Christine floats the idea of Traci singing again with Danny, and Nina answers with a line that doubles as a promise to the audience. “I’ll come back for that,” Nina replies.
How Lauralee Bell and Tricia Cast became best friends in real life
Rewind to 1986. Soap Opera Digest notes that Nina was introduced forty years ago as a troubled teenager whom Cricket encountered on a park bench, and Bell’s memory of those days shows her refreshing humility despite all her success.
“I was intimidated by her because she was so good,” Bell recalled. What unnerved her wasn’t technique. “Not only is she a good actor, but she’s so real,” Bell reflected, describing the gap she felt she needed to close.
The friendship built slowly. “We were close back then, but not as close as we were in the early mid ’90s. It was the 1980s where we were just getting to know each other,” Bell explained, and clips still surface that capture the era, including one she saw recently of Cricket trying to turn Nina into a lady by balancing books on her head. Playing best friends did the rest of the work. Bell is certain that Cricket and Nina’s bond on screen accelerated the real one, since the two were thrown together constantly and got lucky enough to enjoy it.
“We wouldn’t just run lines and then be like, okay, see you on set,” Bell remembered, describing dressing room campouts and shared dinners on late nights. A few years in, Cast moved into Bell’s place for a couple of months between living situations, and the friendship stopped being a work friendship for good.
“Even though we’re very different, we’re perfect as friends, because I can be totally honest with her. She can be brutally honest with me, and we still don’t fault the other one for telling us our faults or weaknesses or positives, whatever. And we just love hanging out together,” Bell said.
Fun fact: Tricia Cast is frighteningly good at Jeopardy
Bell’s affection and admiration of her friend is clear. “She’s not a sugar coater,” Bell said, adding that Cast is very honest and very smart. “Every time she’s over, I have Jeopardy on,” Bell explained, and the score is not close. “If I get past the $200 questions, it’s a miracle,” Bell laughed, while her friend was answering before the contestants finished reading. “Before anyone guesses, she’s already said, what is, who is?” Bell marveled. Cast reliably knows Final Jeopardy, too.

Cricket and Nina are one of the most beloved and enduring on-screen friendships in daytime television. “To see us grow up together on and off camera, it’s just, there’s very few friendships that have spanned this many years. So, it’s fun to have the fans in on that friendship,” Bell said. She also rejects the idea that the audience is watching from outside the circle. “Anyone from our age group or anyone who was watching at that time, you’re part of the friend group too. It’s all of us,” she added.
Traci is folding into that circle now. “She knows all about Nina’s history and asks, of course, about her past,” Bell explained, which sets up a formation she’d happily sign for. “We could easily turn into the three Musketeers,” Bell noted, adding that all three of them fit right in.

CBS reports that Lauralee Bell joined the cast in July 1983 as model Cricket Blair, and the schedule reflected that modest ambition. “I started just doing two or four days that first summer,” Bell recalled. The mail was encouraging, and the show expanded the corner of Genoa City she lived in. “We had some good responses, and then they brought Tricia Cast in to just do a summer storyline,” Bell recalled.
The family’s move west changed her odds considerably. “When The Bold and the Beautiful started, I knew we had to move out here, and that was thrilling for me,” Bell shared, though she wasn’t counting on anything. Her logic at the time was pure pragmatism. “I just know I have a better chance if I’m in the right state.”
“I knew I had so much to learn,” Bell admitted, crediting the veterans around her with teaching her the craft in real time. Eileen Davidson is a name she brings up often, and she has told her as much directly. “Thankfully, our audience was very patient and thankfully there was no social media at that time,” Bell said. Although she is humble, fans certainly embraced her from the start, and critics also praised her work. Like Cast and Maitland, she’s an Emmy winner and has won numerous other awards.
Why Lauralee Bell still signs her name Cricket
Four decades into acting on The Young and the Restless, the nickname Cricket has continued through her character’s modeling career, law degree, and the district attorney’s office. It does not bother her at all. “I only sign pictures writing Cricket,” Bell revealed, acknowledging that the name doesn’t quite work in legal mode.
“I love that certain characters will only refer to me as Cricket,” Bell explained, singling out Nina and Danny. She finds the split perfectly true to life, since plenty of people go by one name with family and another with everyone else.

Lauralee Bell marvels at some of the reasons Thursday’s episode felt so joyful to film. “We’re in our 50s, and life is good, and I feel good,” Bell said, floating the idea of Cricket and Nina drawing up a checklist of everything they still want to do and exploring that middle-aged vibe together.
Since the actress first appeared on the show, fans wholeheartedly embraced the character Cricket, and The Young and the Restless remains daytime’s ratings leader, with Soap Opera Network reporting that the show averaged more than three million viewers for the twenty-fourth consecutive week during the week of July 6, drawing 3.252 million and posting year-over-year gains of 317,000. For a show that was already the top daytime drama, getting lots of new viewers is even more impressive.
Summertime in daytime dramas used to have lots of room for lighter fare between the heavy arcs. “I come from the time of fun in the summer,” Bell said, noting that the deep stuff was always there but the season belonged to something breezier. Thursday delivers on that memory precisely. “I’m just glad that this is really kind of just smiles and laughter,” Bell said, and the three of them will be waiting at The Shadow Room with a full drink menu and forty years of love and friendship to reminisce on.
