Geno Smith had his first preseason action of the summer and the Jets’ first team defense played into the second quarter during their preseason 17-0 victory in Pittsburgh.
It was Smith’s first appearance as a Jet in 9 years, 302 days. While he only played one series, Smith was perfect (7-of-7 passing, 65 yards), leading the Jets to an opening drive touchdown. With two defenders in his face, Smith rolled left and found TE Jelani Woods who ran into the end zone for the 13-yard score.
The Jets added to the lead in the fourth quarter when Jason Sanders converted on a 38-yard field-goal attempt and WR Quincy Skinner Jr. had a late TD catch.
At the start of the second quarter the Steelers were driving into the red zone but S Andre Cisco intercepted QB Will Howard’s look to Roman Wilson at the Jets’ 8-yard line.
The Jets forced Pittsburgh to punt on the two drives prior with a three-and-out and rookie David Bailey’s sack on Howard for an 11-yard loss on third down.
