It’s been a busy offseason for the Dallas Mavericks on the roster-building front.
The team has made several key moves in recent weeks, notably agreeing to a buyout with Klay Thompson and extending Naji Marshall’s contract. With the team’s training camp a month away, is Dallas’ roster officially set with its current makeup? General manager Mike Schmitz spoke about the Mavericks’ roster in a recent appearance on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM).
Schmitz said he feels good about where the roster is at this point.
“You’re always evaluating and looking for ways to get better. It’s probably not a time to do victory laps in August or September or even October,” Schmitz said. “Excited about some of the additions that we’ve made. Everything from coach Dusty May to all the way down the roster. You’re always looking for ways to get better, but definitely feel like we’ve gotten bigger, gotten a little more athletic, added some shooting to the group and really just excited to get going, get closer to training camp.”
Schmitz said the Mavericks are focused on creating a culture of competition in their roster throughout the 2026-27 season.
“You want a culture of competition, a healthy competition, where guys are fighting for minutes and the level is raised. I think you’re going to see that with some of the depth that you mentioned, and making sure that every practice, every game, every shootaround, everything is incredibly competitive and there’s something at stake,” Schmitz said. “We feel like some of the additions we’ve made will help foster that competitiveness, along with a lot of the guys who were on the roster when we got here.”
