HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Students at Long Leaf Elementary School in Hattiesburg are heading into their weekend all smiles after a special performance from a local singer.
Elsie is a Columbia native and is currently a contestant on this season of America’s Got Talent.
She held a Friday morning mini-concert at the school while she is spending time in Mississippi.
Elsie says that it brings her joy to be viewed as a role model for the younger generation.
“Growing up in Mississippi, the odds are already against us,” she said. “The world sees us a certain way. But to be in the national spotlight and to be able to show kids from the Pine Belt, from Mississippi, from Hattiesburg, from Columbia—which is where I’m from—that this is possible.
So that just really makes me so excited to see who else is going to come up behind me because they saw that they could do it.”
