CLEAR LAKE, Iowa. (KTTC) – Clear Lake Police say a Phoenix resident was arrested after allegedly stealing a car and leading authorities on a chase Friday night.
Authorities say around 2 p.m. that afternoon, police responded to I-35 for a report of a stolen car traveling south from the Minnesota border. Officers would eventually find the car in the city of Clear Lake and attempted to stop it; however, the driver reportedly fled from authorities, continuing to speed south on the interstate.
The driver then reportedly took exit 188 from I-35, before colliding with another vehicle that was towing a boat. Police say the driver then took off on foot into a nearby cornfield.
Authorities would search the area for hours before finding the driver, Evelio Angulo Gomez, 51, of Phoenix, Arizona, around 6:27 p.m. Gomez was reportedly found in a creek not far from the crash scene.
Gomez was subsequently taken into custody, and faces the following charges:
- Possession of Stolen Property
- Eluding
- Interference with Official Acts
- No Valid Driver’s License
- Failure to Maintain Control
- Speeding
Lastly, authorities added that no one was hurt as a result of the pursuit, or the crash.
