Isle La Motte honors Revolutionary War soldiers with new marker

  • August 22, 2026

ISLE LA MOTTE, Vt. (WCAX) – Isle La Motte, which calls itself Vermont’s first settlement, continued celebrating America’s 250th anniversary Saturday with a day honoring its earliest soldiers and settlers.

The day started with a lecture on Lake Champlain’s role in the fight for independence. Attendees then moved to Burying Yard Point, where the historical society unveiled a new state marker and re-dedicated a monument first placed there in 1927.

Both plaques honor Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the town’s first cemetery. Some of their direct descendants were there to witness it. For one historical society member, that tie is what makes the day mean so much.

“It’s connection. Everybody here is connected to our history, too. It’s wonderful,” said Peter Brzozowy, Isle La Motte Historical Society.

Saturday’s events are part of a summer-long celebration called “Isle La Motte Celebrates Our Independence.” It’s the only town in the Champlain Islands backing Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission.
