The Portland-born coffee roaster transforms a historic theatre for its new outpost 

Stumptown Coffee Roasters — the Portland-born retailer, roaster and third-wave coffee trailblazer — is making a grand quasi-return to Los Angeles this month with the debut of a flagship in a former historic Lincoln Heights theater.  

The new space converts the historic Starland Theatre into Stumptown’s L.A. hub for training and retail cafe services.  

“Since the beginning, we’ve believed our cafes should be more than places to enjoy great coffee — they should reflect the character of the neighborhoods they serve,” said Julianne Pike, director of retail, of the new venue. “Starland embodies that philosophy, honoring the building’s history through details like its historic theater relief façade and original terrazzo tile while creating a space that’s warm, welcoming and distinctly Stumptown.”

While Stumptown has had a Pasadena cafe since February 2024, the new L.A. location marks a notable reemergence for the roaster, which closed its Arts District cafe in January 2024. The shuttering of the Santa Fe Avenue outpost came after 10 years of service. It first opened as artisanal-forward third-wave coffee was peaking, leading the way alongside roasters like Blue Bottle Coffee and Intelligentsia, and as the neighborhood experienced a thriving period.  

Over in Lincoln Heights, the new Stumptown will be on the opposite side of Downtown L.A.’s Bunker Hill and Historic Core, just a few miles from the former Arts District outpost. Angelenos can get a first taste at the grand opening on Aug. 29 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. (RSVPs are on Partiful.)  

Throughout the day, the cafe will serve its classic menu items alongside exclusive offerings like custom Starland merchandise and limited-edition beverages, including a passion fruit espresso tonic and horchata cold foam shakerato.
