Maxim Shabanov has a legitimate chance to earn time next to Kirill Kaprizov, but expecting him to immediately duplicate Mats Zuccarello’s production would be unfair. However, he may offer the Wild a different and potentially more dynamic version of top-line support. Still, replacing Zuccarello’s points, power-play influence, and established chemistry is a massive first-year NHL assignment.
Zuccarello finished last season with 15 goals and 39 assists in 59 games, good for 54 points despite missing time. That’s roughly a 75-point pace across 82 games, which is an excellent offensive benchmark for a complementary winger. He wasn’t merely a passenger on Kaprizov’s line, either. Zuccarello’s patient puck management, passing touch, and ability to find Kaprizov in dangerous areas made him an important offensive connector for Minnesota.
Shabanov arrives with a much different profile. The 25-year-old signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with the Wild after producing in the KHL, and Minnesota clearly views him as more than a depth flier. He’s a skilled, speedy winger who can carry the puck through the neutral zone, attack defenders off the rush, and create offense with quick hands. 66 percent of Shabanov’s zone entries were controlled entries, an especially encouraging number for a player whose game will need to translate to the NHL’s faster, more physical environment.
That trait matters next to Kaprizov. Teams devote enormous attention to Minnesota’s superstar, often loading up their defensive coverage whenever he has the puck. A linemate who can independently transport the puck into the offensive zone and force defenders to make choices could give Kaprizov more room to operate. Shabanov doesn’t have to replicate Zuccarello’s game immediately if he can make opponents respect a second puck carrier on the line.
There’s also a stylistic case that Shabanov could fit Kaprizov better in certain situations. Zuccarello excelled as a deliberate, creative distributor who could slow the game down and find seams. Shabanov’s game appears built more around pace, transition, and attacking off movement. Minnesota wants to play faster at five-on-five, and Shabanov could help make a Kaprizov-led line more difficult to contain in open ice.
Still, there’s an enormous difference between displaying offensive talent in the KHL and producing at Zuccarello’s level in the NHL. Zuccarello had years of experience reading NHL defensive structures, operating on the power play, and knowing precisely when to defer to Kaprizov and when to shoot. Those subtle decisions are a major reason his partnership with Kaprizov worked for so long.
However, the comparison becomes particularly difficult on the power play. Zuccarello supplied high-end passing on the top unit and was comfortable playing under pressure along the half wall. Last year, he recorded 39 assists overall, highlighting the playmaking burden he carried in the Wild offense. Shabanov has the hands and vision to contribute there eventually. Still, Minnesota should not assume he can step directly into Zuccarello’s spot and make the same reads against NHL penalty kills.
The most realistic outcome is that Shabanov complements Kaprizov rather than replicates Zuccarello. If he earns top-line minutes, the Wild should measure his first season less by whether he reaches a 75-point pace and more by whether the line controls play, generates transition chances, and gives Kaprizov a reliable second threat.
Shabanov could certainly produce 45 to 55 points if the opportunity, power play usage, and chemistry are there. Surpassing that would make him one of the league’s best value signings. But matching Zuccarello’s full offensive impact immediately is unlikely. The better bet is that Shabanov brings speed and individual puck skill to the top line, while the Wild gradually determine whether those tools can develop into the same kind of trusted partnership Kaprizov had with Zuccarello.
