For the second day in a row, the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Monday shattered its high-temperature record when the mercury topped out at DFW International Airport at 108 degrees during the afternoon.

The region’s official weather reporting station at the big airport logged the new temperature benchmark at 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service and it was possible temperatures could still rise further before they begin their descent for the day. The previous high temperature for this day was 107 degrees, which was set back in 2023, according to the weather service.

The weather service’s Fort Worth office had already issued an extreme heat warning that was in effect through Monday evening for North and Central Texas. The heat index, or “feels like” temperature was expected to be as hot as 114 degrees in some areas, the weather service said.

DFW International Airport hit 109 degrees on Sunday, according to the weather service, and eclipsed the previous record high for the day of 107 degrees that was set in 2010.

Forecasters are urging people to limit outdoor activity this week during the hottest parts of the day, typically from 2 p.m.  to 7 p.m., to drink plenty of water and spend time in the shade or in air conditioning when possible.

The dangerous heat is expected to continue through the week with highs remaining in the triple digits. A weak cold front later in the week could bring increased cloud cover and low rain chances but temperatures are expected to remain near 100 degrees.

The prolonged dry weather also continues to raise concerns about grass fires across North Texas. The weather service said the combination of a lack of widespread rain for more than a month, lower humidity and light winds has elevated the fire threat.
