SAN ANTONIO – Stone Oak neighbors remain concerned about speeding, even those who do not live on Hardy Oak Boulevard, where a deadly crash earlier this month renewed calls for drivers to slow down.
Cindy Del Valle was one of many KSAT viewers who reached out and expressed concerns about speeding on other roads in the community.
“We can’t seem to get people to slow down,” Del Valle said.
Del Valle, who lives off Wilderness Oak, said her walks have become a lot more stressful.
“It’s a little unnerving, especially if you see that they’re distracted,” she said.
Del Valle said she reached out to Distrct 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears about the issue. Soon after that, digital speed limit signs were installed in the area.
“Initially, cars were starting to brake a little more,” Del Valle said. “But we really didn’t see any decrease (in speed).”
Within the 78258 ZIP code, the San Antonio Police Department recorded 58 speeding incidents in July.
There were also 115 crashes recorded in the Stone Oak area last month, of which 21 were speeding-related. Collisions involving speeding were more than twice as likely to result in injury, according to state traffic data.
Del Valle said she would like to see four-way stops added to more intersections along Wilderness Oak in order to limit the speed that can build up between intersections.
More importantly, however, Del Valle hopes the early August tragedy makes people reflect on the impact speeding can have.
“I understand the world is busier. We have a lot of places we have to be at certain times,” Del Valle said to drivers. “You probably think that you don’t need to go that slow. But that one time that you mess up, you can’t take that back. You can’t bring that life back.”
