South Bend Museum of Art may have to move as Century Center’s future is in question

  • August 25, 2026

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Questions are emerging about the future of South Bend’s Century Center and the art museum inside it.

City and tourism leaders are weighing whether to renovate, redevelop or move the convention center as the nearly 50-year-old building ages.

Our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune report the South Bend Museum of Art could learn Thursday, Aug. 27, whether the city will begin a three-year lease expiration process.

The Century Center opened in 1977 and has not had a major renovation since. Local tourism leaders are considering options including renovation, redevelopment or moving convention operations elsewhere. The city says no final decision has been made.

Even if the process begins, South Bend Museum of Art Executive Director Lisa Shaffer said a full move out of its specifically designed space could take five to seven years.
