A 17-year-old was killed in a car crash while allegedly street racing in Chula Vista, officials said Tuesday.

Police said in a statement that they responded at around 7:40 p.m. Monday to a Toyota Corolla and a Hyundai Elantra traveling at high speeds near the intersection of East Palomar St. and La Media Road.

The teen driving the Corolla was heading east on East Palomar St. when he tried to make a turn and struck a curb before crashing into a palm tree, police said.

First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The victim’s name has not been released.

Police said the driver of the Hyundai, a 28-year-old Chula Vista man, remained at the scene. He reportedly had two children in the back seat, but no one in that car immediately reported any injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Officials are asking anyone with information about the crash to call Chula Vista police at (619) 476-2428.
