In late July, President Trump signed three executive orders relating to artificial intelligence as part of the administration’s push to deregulate AI and promote its use. One of those executive orders, titled “Preventing Woke AI in the Federal Government,” directed government agencies to not contract with AI model developers for models that “manipulate responses in favor of ideological dogmas such as DEI.”

DEI, or “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” is defined in the order as including “the suppression or distortion of factual information about race or sex; manipulation of racial or sexual representation in model outputs; incorporation of concepts like critical race theory, transgenderism, unconscious bias, intersectionality, and systemic racism; and discrimination on the basis of race or sex.”

Karandeep Singh, an influential voice in health AI and chief health AI officer at UC San Diego Health, is frustrated with the order, calling its treatment of DEI and bias “disingenuous,” especially for health-related applications of AI.
