Just about every major highway running through and around San Antonio is getting some level of facelift… or will be soon. But that often means tricky weekend highway hurdles that require detours or cause delays. This time, a $473 million overhaul of Highway 90 is prompting a state agency to completely shut down Loop 1604 at a busy intersection for the weekend.
From 9 a.m. Friday, August 28, through 5 p.m. Monday, the Texas Department of Transportation is closing Loop 1604, including both the northbound and southbound main lanes, where it intersects with Highway 90 on the Far Westside. Drivers will be diverted to the frontage roads – a surefire way to add more traffic time to any weekend travel plans.
“The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely complete paving activities as part of the ongoing US 90 Expansion Project,” a nearby resident shared in a neighborhood Facebook group, seemingly referring to the TxDOT closure notice. “Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, expect delays and follow posted detour routes.”
The construction is part of a massive revamp of nearly an 8-mile stretch of Highway 90 between Loop 410 and Highway 211 in west Bexar County. Highway 90 will be expanded from four lanes to a six-lane expressway and frontage roads will be widened to two or three lanes in each direction. In addition, intersections will be improved, turnarounds will be added at Highway 211 and Loop 1604, and a two-lane flyover ramp will connect westbound Highway 90 to northbound Loop 1604.
Construction on the first phase began last year, covering the area between Loop 1604 and Loop 410. The second phase, spanning from Loop 1604 to Highway 211, should start in 2027. The entire project should be completed by 2031.
“TxDOT is improving mobility for San Antonio drivers with the US 90 Expansion project in West Bexar County. This transformative project is a significant investment in transportation infrastructure designed to increase connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety within the region,” the TxDOT project website states.
