PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Friday is a First Alert Weather Day for extreme heat. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect today and tomorrow, which is also a First Alert Day for heat.
Sunday and Monday are also First Alert Weather Days for the chance of monsoon storms. A major weather pattern change is shaping up for Arizona this weekend.
A strong ridge of high pressure that has brought intense heat for the last week is finally shifting east. Today, look for a high of 112 degrees, with a high of about 109 degrees likely for tomorrow. The Extreme Heat Warning expires at 8 p.m. Saturday.
As the ridge shifts east, a trough of low pressure is also coming onshore in the Northwest. This will help draw additional moisture into Arizona, increasing humidity and storm chances over the next few days.
After a few isolated showers this morning in the Valley, the afternoon looks quiet. By tonight, there’s a 20 percent chance of storms in the Valley. Gusty winds and blowing dust are possible as well.
Saturday morning looks quiet in the Valley, but by the evening hours, storm chances climb to 50 percent. Storm chances remain high near 40 to 50 percent throughout the day Sunday, into Sunday night and into Monday as well. Strong storms are possible with damaging winds and heavy rain. Drier air moves in and cuts storm chances from Tuesday on next week.
Temperatures are set to fall with the cloud cover and rain chances this weekend. Look for a high of 105 on Sunday, and right near the triple-digit mark on Sunday and Monday.
