Imagineers are now using augmented reality to sculpt the environments for their projects. They are also experimenting with other uses for this technology.
Augmented Reality
Kendall Harvey is the Software Product Engineer for Walt Disney Imagineering, and he explains how Disney is looking into new and emerging technologies and applying them to create bigger and better attractions.
He takes us to Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge, which opens on July 1, 2027. There, they are using augmented reality to see how the final products will look by projecting the images onto the surfaces through a headset.
It comes through as a three-dimensional model and shows crews exactly what they need to do in order to execute the creative vision. It allows them to not need to look at a 2D image to create the final product. The target is hit the first time, every time.
Everything is done on the device, which allows them to be more efficient by noting adjustments in the device itself. It shaves off months of work.
Going forward, they are looking at how to apply this technology to other projects, including nighttime shows, animatronics, and more.
