SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Animal Care Services and San Antonio Pets Alive! are urging residents to foster shelter animals after storms knocked out power, leaving hundreds of dogs and cats in hot kennels.
Lisa Norwood, the ACS public relations manager, said staff brought in swamp fans to cool the kennels, but conditions are worsening as temperatures rise.

“It’s starting to get hotter and hotter, and we do not know when the power is going to be coming back on,” Norwood said.
The shelters are looking for emergency fosters who can take in one dog or cat for at least one week. ACS will provide food, a crate, toys and a bed at no cost.
The shelter is also accepting donations of pop-up crates, newspapers, and dog and cat food.

Animal Care Services will be open until 5 p.m. Saturday. Residents interested in fostering or donating should go directly to the shelters.
Pets can also be picked up at the San Antonio Pets Alive! Medical Care and Adoption Center at 9107 Marbach Road, Suite 109.
The outage disrupted internet service, so staff are processing foster applications on paper, and applicants should expect some wait times, ACS said.
