SAN ANTONIO – Friday night’s storm that hit San Antonio caused a lot of damage on the West Side.
Forceful winds left a trampoline in the trees, ripped off rooftops, and blew down a wooden structure along with countless trees and tree branches. Drivers on West Commerce were forced to veer into the other lane to avoid debris.
Just a few blocks behind the vacant Rodriguez Butcher Supply Building, which had its roof torn off, a massive tree was uprooted by the wind and crushed a car beneath. Neighbors said, thankfully, no one was hurt.
Sarah DeLaVega’s home had its roof shingles sheared off by the winds like wool from a sheep. She and her husband were not home when the storm came through, but neighbors told them the winds did not spare their house.
“It’s just a shock. My poor pecan tree,” DeLaVega said. “They called me, and they said, your pecan tree fell on your garage.”
DeLaVega said she is going to miss the shade it provided, but it was not the only thing damaged.
“I noticed there was some dirt and dust on my entertainment center,” DeLaVega said. Then I looked behind the wall, and you can notice how the wall is blown in.”
She pointed to several cracks on the wall that were not there before.
Despite the damage, she said she is grateful no lives were lost, but said she is concerned since the power went out at 9 p.m. Friday night and it may not be restored for a good while.
DeLaVega said she and a couple of her neighbors said they are worried about older adults in their neighborhood.
“I have neighbors that are sick and elderly,” DeLaVega said, “and I just feel for them that they have to go through this.”
“Just imagine a person who barely has movement and needs water or needs ice or needs an insulin shot,” neighbor Rosa Turner Zavala said. “We need the help.”
“We need somebody to come out and help us, not just go to the North Side,” neighbor Dolores Almaguer said. “It’s bad enough we already went through one night of no electricity, and to think that we’re going to have to do this again.”
The neighbors said electricity is no longer just a convenience; it’s essential. Not only is it required for refrigerated medications and medical devices, but they said it is also crucial to receiving important updates.
Without electricity, neighbors said they can not watch the local news, charge their cellphones or laptops, or even connect to the internet to get updates on the recovery process. Nor can they call 311 to report damage or request assistance.
“We check on each other,” Turner Zavala said. “We are neighbors; just talk to each other.”
Residents told KSAT that neighbors have helped cut broken tree limbs and dragged them to the curb for each other, along with family friends and church members. But they stressed that, considering all the damage that has not been touched yet, more help would be appreciated.
