JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four Duval County schools are getting extra financial and community support this school year through Two Dope Chicks Who Give A Care’s “When We Pull Up” tour.
The Jacksonville organization selected Ed White High School, Westside Middle School, S.A. Hull Elementary School and Ribault Middle School for this year’s initiative.
Schools participated by submitting videos for consideration, and the organization’s board narrowed the submissions down to four schools.
Founders Millicent and Shawnta Pride-Daniels said the initiative is designed to provide schools with additional resources while building relationships with students, faculty and staff.
“We’re just happy to be able to provide additional funds to these schools that will go in the principal’s discretionary account to increase school morale and provide incentives for the faculty and kids,” the founders said.
The money gives school leaders flexibility to address needs on their campuses.
At Ed White High School, a student said the donation could help pay for school supplies, student celebrations and other opportunities while recognizing positive behavior and achievement.
“These donations help make our school a better environment by giving students more resources, recognizing positive behavior and achievement and providing extra support to help us succeed,” the student said.
The student said the impact extends beyond the money.
“What you are doing is bigger than just donating,” the student said. “You are supporting our education, encouraging us and showing us the importance of giving back to others.”
At S.A. Hull Elementary School, the support held special meaning for the school’s first-year principal.
“My heart is extremely full, especially being a first-year principal,” the principal said. “This means so much to this school.”
Support continues beyond the tour
Millicent and Shawnta Pride-Daniels said the “When We Pull Up” initiative is not designed to end once the organization delivers its donations.
“They get us the whole school year,” the founders said. “We’re actively participating in the schools, parent nights, orientations, coming in, volunteering all school year long. So when we pull up, it’s all year.”
For Millicent and Shawnta Pride-Daniels, giving back to Duval County schools is personal. Millicent is a product of Duval County Public Schools, while Shawnta previously worked as an educator in the district.
The founders said those connections are part of why they believe in investing not only in students, but also in the teachers, staff and administrators who support them every day.
The organization hopes to expand the initiative in the future. After selecting four schools this year, the founders said they want to bring additional community partners on board so “When We Pull Up” can reach even more schools next year.
