From academic aid to financial education, TRIO Student Support Services provides various offerings for students.
TRIO’s main services include coaching and guiding students through academic needs and the resources available to develop a plan of action, in-person and virtual tutoring, academic success and personal development workshops, and financial education, according to its website.
Daisy Jones, TRIO student ready adviser, said their staff works with first-generation students or those who are registered with the Student Access and Resource Center, as well as students who qualify for Federal Pell Grants.
“The students we serve are parts of marginalized groups, and sometimes they just don’t know these services exist, and they find themselves trying to matriculate through the college experience,” Jones said.
The staff tries to match students with the resources that meet their needs, whether it’s finding tutors, providing academic assistance or more, she said.
Additionally, the staff helps students with selecting courses, setting academic goals and developing strategies for academic achievement, according to its website.
While staff can meet with students to go over general degree plan questions, TRIO does not do academic advising for specific major-related questions.
The program also offers resources such as scantrons and other testing and study materials, free printing and a tutoring room where students can have a quiet space to study, Jones said.
While TRIO’s services can help students academically, they don’t stop there.
Jones said TRIO staff partners with the Student Money Management Center on campus to help students learn about credit, financial literacy, how to save money and how their financial aid works or may be affected by things like dropping a class.
The staff also goes over job-readiness skills by providing mock interviews, resume workshops and connecting students with internships they may be interested in, she said.
“A lot of our students like to come in, especially on a heavy workload or heavy class day, just to come in and talk,” Jones said. “And that’s the beauty of TRIO as well, because we don’t have to just strictly talk about academics.”
These services are open to any major and year as long as they’re pursuing their bachelor’s degree, she said.
“I like to tell them, once they join us, they can’t get rid of us, but we are just the extra layer of support for our students as they matriculate through their undergrad career,” Jones said.
