Tom Sturdivant, 93, passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2026, in Fort Worth. Tom was ethical, smart, faithful and devoted gentleman. He was blessed with a long and healthy life. He was a modest pillar of the community. He chaired and served on many boards and strongly believed in giving back to his community. Tom was born in Tulsa and grew up living in various Oklahoma towns. His parents were Dr. Ben S. Sturdivant and Elizabeth Carlock Sturdivant. He graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1951 and The University of Oklahoma in 1955 where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Upon graduation he entered the Navy and was on board the US Helena in the Pacific Ocean for two years. Tom thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Navy and made many lifelong friends. When Dan and Diane were young, his bedtime stories often involved his time on the US Helena and frogman stories. Tom majored in Geology and his career started in the oil business with DuPont oil. He spent the majority of his career as a commercial real estate banker. He loved working and immensely enjoyed his career. After church on Sunday he often enjoyed driving around with his family and looking at properties. Lunch was always on the horizon so his family learned to be patient. He reluctantly retired at 85. He worked for the Ryan Companies for nearly 40 years, Mellon Mortgage and then started his own firm Sturdivant Capital, which was a lifelong goal. He received his MAI designation in 1970, a prestigious professional title awarded by the Appraisal Institute. It’ Tom’s parents instilled in him the importance of faith, wisdom, honesty and manners. Tom was a wise, polite and principled man who always worked hard. His character, integrity and dignity were exemplary. He was always proper, meticulous, and a sharp dresser. He had a kind heart and enjoyed helping young children learn to read at Diamond Hill elementary through the Big Brother organization.Tom was a loyal OU fan and a very proud Sooner. He enjoyed watching all sports but especially football and basketball. He and Deborah enjoyed watching OU women’s softball together, they won eight NCAA National Championships. He thoroughly enjoyed playing tennis until he was 90 at Shady Oaks Country Club. Tom played tennis three times a week but switched to twice a week in his eighties. He also enjoyed working out there and was an avid walker. Tom stayed fit his entire life. Tom and Deborah loved to travel and they had many wonderful travel experiences. They enjoyed many holidays and trips with their very dear and close friends. Pat and Karl Alexander, Gayla and Charles Ferree, Suzie and Jim Murray, and Glenda and Jack Rattikin. Tom adored their monthly supper club family of 45 years. He wouldn’t want me to divulge but he especially enjoyed it when Jo Hickman and Libby Page were hosting. All the wives in the group were fabulous cooks. He loved and adored his wife Deborah. He was a devoted husband and father to Dan and Diane. He loved being a grandad to Austin. He dearly loved his entire family and was always generous. When Austin’s father died, he welcomed and took on the father role. He attended all of his soccer games and tennis matches. Tom went on Indian Guide camp outs and Boy Scout activities. He was a devoted big brother to Jim and Jane and missed them both dearly in his later years. He and Jim spoke, emailed or texted several times a week. He always enjoyed sharing Jim’s jokes. The family spent over forty summers in Estes Park Colorado at the YMCA of the Rockies. He loved hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park and enjoyed his last hike at the age of 88. Tom served on several First United Methodist boards, He was chair of finance and several other committees. He was a long time member of the Inquires Class. Harris Hospital (THR) board of Trustees for over 20 years. He was also a loyal member of Fort Worth Rotary and OU Club. Tom outlived his closest friends, Karl Alexander, Dick Bourland, Dave Bloxom, Charles Ferree, Holt Hickman, Jerry Milligan, Jim Murray and Jack Rattikin. Preceding Tom in death were his parents, Dr. Ben and Elizabeth Sturdivant, his brother Jim Sturdivant, sister Jane Stephens. Survivors are his wife of almost seventy years, Deborah, his son Dan and wife, Maria, his daughter Diane and her husband Michael, grandson Austin Dolan, sister-in-law Barbara Sturdivant, brother-in-law David Stephens; six nieces and nephews; Leah and Mike Pace and great-grandchildren, Mason and Madison Pace. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Robert Kelly for his attentiveness, extraordinary care and kindness to Tom over many years. Memorial service will be Monday, Aug. 31 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church.800 W 5th St, Fort Worth 76102. A reception will follow in Wesley Hall.
