Newborn baby found dead in bin in southwest Sydney’s Auburn as police search for mother

A newborn baby boy has been found dead in a garbage bin in southwest Sydney.

The baby, believed to have been no more than 36 hours old, was discovered in a bin at a unit block along Harrow Rd in Auburn about 11.20am on Monday.

A woman taking rubbish to the bin found the unclothed baby inside a plastic garbage bag, NSW Police Detective Assistant Superintendent Darren Sly said.

“It’s very traumatic for that particular lady who found the baby, and of course the emergency services,” Sly said. 

“It’s a newborn baby, who has now passed away, and of course, what else can we say? 

“It’s sad, it’s a horrific set of circumstances.”

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery and hold serious concerns for the welfare of the baby’s mother.

Officers are urging the mother to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent medical care.

“If there was to be any police action that is not our priority whatsoever,” Sly said.

“Our only priority at the moment is for the welfare of that mother and ensuring that she does go immediately to a hospital or other medical centre and seek the medical care that she needs.”

Anyone with information about the incident, or who was in the area during the previous 36 hours and may have relevant dashcam or mobile phone footage, is urged to contact Auburn Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
