It has been a wild ride for wide receiver Matt Mayfield. In April of 2023, the talented pass catcher committed to Mississippi State as part of the 2024 class. The decision was straight forward, but nearly everything that followed had some twists and turns.

Mayfield spent the early stages of his high school career at Tuerlings Catholic (LA). His junior year saw him compete and win a great deal at Beau Chene High School (LA). Prior to his senior high school season, Mayfield elected to move to Opelousas, Louisiana and live with his mother. A complain was filed, an investigation was conducted and an adverse ruling was handed down.

The Louisiana High School Activities Association felt that the move was athletically motivated and ruled him ineligible for his senior year. As a result, Mayfield had to train on his own and without the benefit of competition.

Mayfield maintained his verbal commitment to Mississippi State, but signing day came and went without the two parties announcing a signing day agreement. Eventually, Mayfield enrolled at Co-Lin.

Last year, Mayfield played his freshman season in the Mississippi JuCo system. He appeared in seven games making thirteen catches for 274 yards and a touchdown. A four catch game against Holmes was the highlight of the season.

Back on June 10th, Mississippi State extended an offer to Mayfield for the second time. Just like the first go around, Mayfield accepted it. He announced his decision to join the Bulldogs earlier this evening. We hope to have more with him in the days ahead about his decision to come full circle with State.

Mayfield will play the 2025 season with the Wolfpack of Wesson to complete his associates degree and clear the way for a January enrollment at Mississippi State. He is the 27th commitment to the 2026 Bulldog class, but the first of the junior college variety. State was JuCo heavy down the stretch in 2024, but the Bulldogs are expected to be a lot more selective this go around. The fact that Mayfield has a pre-existing relationship with State wide receiver coach Chad Bumphis likely factored in this go around.

Co-Lin will open the 2025 season against Coahoma. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM CT. Mayfield is expected to be a big factor in things this season for the W0lfpack. He is a very physical presence with a great catch radius. Mayfield is expected to play outside the numbers once he enrolls at Mississippi State. As it stands today, he will have three years to play two unless the court case involving Junior College years of experience ends with a boost in eligibility for affected players.
