CINCINNATI — Home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez exited Monday’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres with heat exhaustion, needing some assistance to leave the field but walking off under his own power.
The incident played out before the start of the fifth inning Monday. Trainers attended to the 46-year-old Gonzalez as he sat on the field near home plate, and he was helped down the third-base line before exiting. The game resumed after a 14-minute delay. The Reds later announced that Gonzalez was dealing with heat exhaustion.
First base umpire D.J. Reyburn took over behind the plate, and the umpiring crew eschewed a second-base umpire, with Ron Kulpa taking over at first and Tom Hanahan at third.
The scene played out on a warm August evening at Great American Ball Park. The temperature was 90 degrees with 61 percent humidity at the start of Monday’s game. Around 8 p.m. ET, it was still 85 degrees with a heat index warning in effect for the area.
