Q: What career path do you hope to pursue after college?
A: I hope that eventually I can get my master’s to go into teaching. But right now, my plan is to do a tattoo apprenticeship after I graduate. Just with these last two semesters building up more of my portfolio
Q: Do you have a project that you hope to pursue?
A: Yes, I have this high fantasy universe, it’s called “Oracle.” It’s where all my oil paintings live and so it’s really every painting is about this universe, and I’m really inspired by when I was little, Cartoon Network, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, stuff like that. I’ve always wanted to make a full-blown story, whether it be a graphic novel or a cartoon.
Q: Is there an artist that influenced you or that you look up to?
A: Yes, I would say Fox and Comet is a Louisiana-based artist. They do amazing work. It’s more about feminism and changing into animals and stuff like that, which I also think is really cool. Also, Rebecca Sugar, she was the creator of Steven Universe, and so that’s always been one of my bigger inspirations.
Q: What led you to being creative?
A: I definitely think making stories. I think having a narrative and having, even listening to a song and I’ll think of a character I have or I’ll think, “Oh, what if this character went through a big change or they went through something crazy?”
Q: What is something you wish more people understood about creatives and artists?
A: I think there’s a lot more avenues than people think, like job wise. I think it’s like, even growing up, it’s like, “Oh, what are you going to do with that?” You know? Which is kind of frustrating. I do feel like, my perspective is that math and art are kind of the same where it’s like, you can’t do anything without math, you can’t do anything without art.
