That’s when the health system opened Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, a 100-bed high-tech hospital that incorporates solutions such as remote monitoring and ambient listening to support optimal operations and outcomes. Houston Methodist Cypress represents the realization of a decade-long dream of a hospital built from the ground up with a focus on advanced technology and communication, according to a September 2025 blog entry.
“At Houston Methodist Cypress, our goal has never been technology for technology’s sake — it’s about giving clinicians time back, reducing unnecessary burden, improving safety and making care more intuitive,” said S. Nicholas Desai, D.P.M., vice president and COO of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, in an email to Market Scan. “We had the opportunity to build a hospital from the ground up and rethink how the physical environment, digital infrastructure and workflows could work together around the people delivering and receiving care.”
This approach improves care, increases efficiency and reduces clinicians’ day-to-day workload while leaving room to implement new solutions as technologies continue to evolve. Approximately a year and a half into operations, here are some insights from Houston Methodist’s cutting-edge hospital for other healthcare leaders looking to usher in the next generation of care delivery.
Clear communication supports strong relationships with patients.
Like any relationship, strong connections between clinicians and patients depend on clear, effective communication, and many of the solutions embedded in the hospital support that. As soon as a clinician or staff member enters a patient’s room, they see digital signage displaying basic patient information, instructions and updates pulled from the hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) system, getting them up-to-speed instantly, according to HealthTech. Additionally, nurses communicate via a secure messaging application on iPhones to coordinate care while complying with privacy regulations.
The digital whiteboards also keep patients informed, providing real-time updates on procedures, medications, tests and members of their care team.
Technological comforts can make a hospital room feel more like home.
Patients can conveniently adjust their room’s lighting, change the temperature and call for assistance via voice commands — no need to press any buttons
In addition, the digital whiteboards allow them to order food, fostering a sense of control and autonomy. Virtual care cameras and 65-inch TVs in patient rooms also enable patients to video call specialists and loved ones, staying connected with those beyond the hospital’s walls.
Remote monitoring and ambient listening can save clinicians hours.
Houston Methodist Cypress allows clinicians to remotely monitor patients via medical-grade wearable devices that upload data about vitals directly to the EHR system. This can save clinicians a significant amount of time.
“This device really gives time back to nursing assistants because it typically takes them five to seven minutes per patient to take vitals manually,” Caroline Mascarenhas, chief nursing officer at Houston Methodist Cypress, said in the 2025 blog entry about the hospital. “Imagine doing that for ten patients — that’s more than an hour and a half that this technology has already been given back to the PCA and nursing assistant.”
Nursing assistants also need to take vitals only twice per day now instead of four, saving them at least three or four hours, Mascarenhas added.
Ambient listening technology makes documentation more efficient, allowing clinicians to spend more time engaging with patients and less time on administrative tasks. The result is a more connected care experience and a better balance for care teams.
Forward-thinking facilities can accommodate evolving technology.
The facility has flexible walls to facilitate the installation of new wiring and connectivity equipment, according to HealthTech. As technology continues to evolve, the hospital will install advanced cameras, video displays and other solutions as they emerge to support optimal clinician and patient experiences.
“Designing a new hospital created opportunities to embed reliability, security and scalability into the building itself, making Cypress a template for future hospital projects rather than a retrofit constrained by legacy systems,” Jim Francis, CTO and vice president of IT and shared services at Houston Methodist, told HealthTech.

Overall, Houston Methodist’s objective in implementing new and emerging technologies is to improve care and enable more face-to-face interaction between clinicians and patients, while machines automate more of the mundane administrative tasks.
Desai advises other health systems seeking to build high-tech hospitals to start with the problems they aim to solve and involve staff members in the planning phase.
“Don’t build for today alone — create an architecture that can continue to evolve as automation, ambient technologies and AI advance,” he stated. “That’s how we approached Cypress: a platform that can continue to learn, adapt and get better over time.”
