San Antonio residents will soon have a new budget-friendly store to visit. A major Ross-owned brand is investing a proposed $1.4 million into a new location on the Southeast Side.
The California-founded business DD’s Discounts is eyeing a spot in the Mission Crossing shopping center, according to a recently submitted Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) filing. According to the report, submitted on Tuesday, August 25, the company plans to remodel about 32,546 square feet of the suite to reflect its branding.
Part of the Ross family, the company’s website says it offers home decor, toys, and other lifestyle items at lower prices than other retailers. A past press release states that the first few shops opened in 2004, targeting households with incomes of $30,000 to $40,000. At the time, Vice Chairman and CEO Michael Balmuth described the mission as delivering “terrific bargains on moderate department and national discount store brands in a convenient, accessible, easy-to-shop environment.” While similar, many of the labels featured in DD’s Discounts differ from those at Ross.
According to the report submitted on Tuesday, August 25, the company plans to renovate about 32,546 square feet of Suite 116. If all goes as planned, the Goliad Road shop will become the 10th DD’s Discounts in the Alamo City. It will join big-name plaza tenants such as Gold’s Gym and Goodwill.
Suite 116 was previously home to a Big Lots, which announced it was shutting down all of its remaining U.S. locations in December 2024, about three months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Some locations still operate under Variety Wholesalers, but none remain in San Antonio.
DD’s Discounts will primarily focus on adding new interior finishes and modifying the entryway doors. When MySA visited the site in late August, only a trace of the Big Lots shadow remained on the building’s exterior. Building materials could be seen inside the mostly empty suite.
Alterations at Mission Crossing are expected to begin in June 2027 and conclude in September 2027, according to the TDLR report.
MySA reached out for a grand opening timeline but did not receive a response in time for publication.
