New UTSA exhibition 'Antithesis in Contemporary Collage' to mess with your eyes and your head

Collage, bricolage, assemblage — media that skew perspective, create surreal objects and environments, and generally mess with your head — feel like the visual equivalent of automatic writing made manifest.

In actuality, however, they’re highly refined and deliberate constructs intended to corrupt one’s visual acuity by disrupting the field of vision and traditional paths of visual association.

UTSA’s “Antithesis in Contemporary Collage” exhibition presents 16 local, regional and national artists working in these creative arenas. Grappling with notions as antithetical as nostalgia and destruction, this group exhibition falls under the category of brain food.

Curated by Vikky Jones, the exhibition features artists including Todd Brandt, Tink Castillo, Kristen Elzey, Rafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr., Leticia Huerta, Myriam Lanau, Marcy McChesney, Tim Olson, Chloe Poeme, Octavio Quintanilla, Linda Sandoval, Courtney Wynn Sheets, Jennifer Sperry Steinorth, Oscar Tirado, Jeff Wheeler and Donna Zinck.
