Student Government members pledged allegiance to the flag during a meeting Sept. 1 at Trinity Hall. The senators considered resolutions addressing the renaming of the University Center and the creation of a rivalry week.
The Student Senate held its second meeting of the fall semester Tuesday in Trinity Hall.
Reports were given on three resolutions, and three more were introduced.
Resolution 26-11, “A Center for Every Maverick,” calls for the E. H. Hereford University Center to be renamed.
Authored by Student Body President Andres Morales and Chief of Staff Trevor McCullough, the resolution lays out options including simply the University Center, the Jennifer Cowley University Center or another name to be approved through the appropriate UT System process.
This is not the first time Hereford’s name has been put in a resolution to have it removed from the UC; a similar vote failed in 2023.
However, a building on campus has been renamed because of a resolution. The University Administration Building was previously named E.E. Davis Hall. Davis was also seen as a controversial figure in the campus’s history, similar to Hereford.

“This has been done before,” Morales said.
Resolution 26-10, “Rev Up That Rivalry,” calls for the recognition of the sports rivalry between UTA and Tarleton State University, defining the week of Nov. 28 as “rivalry week.”
McCullough, who authored the bill, gave examples of the historical rivalry between the schools.
The first volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games against the institution would be referred to as “the grudge match,” according to the resolution.
“I picked up the idea of really building up that Tarleton State rivalry because we have it,” McCullough said. “I mean, as a Wrangler, it’s something that we care deeply about, and it’s one of our more fun games, that’s for certain.”
Resolution 26-09, “Every Maverick Represented,” calls for the speaker of the Senate and appropriate Student Government officials to review the most recent available university enrollment data for each college and school. They would use this to ensure the allocation of Senate seats for the next election accurately reflects the representation formula established by the Student Government constitution.
Resolution author Jaysen Johnson, chair for community affairs and senator for the College of Liberal Arts, said the numbers don’t match, and they are not following the rules of the constitution because of that.

These resolutions received updates in the meeting:
Resolution 26-03, “Lock, Charge and Go,” which calls for device charging lockers to be placed around campus.
Resolution 26-06, “Match Made at UTA,” which calls for enhancement to the roommate matching process by incorporating more detailed compatibility questions and implementing a roommate feedback service.
Resolution 26-08, “Mavericks at Home,” which calls for an incentive program that awards housing discounts or priority to students who demonstrate meaningful participation in campus life through qualifying activities.
