Children’s Book Drive

Partnership Financial Credit Union is hosting a Book Drive for Bernie’s Book Bank. Drop off new or gently used children’s books—birth to sixth-grade reading level—at any PFCU office. Collection bins are stationed in the lobby. All subjects are welcome, though Bernie’s Book Bank does not distribute textbooks, dictionaries, activity books, coloring books, reference materials, or religious books.

Walda Katz-Fishman and Jerome Scott Discussion discuss Katz-Fishman’s Motown and the Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries. Per Seminary Co-Op’s site, the book draws “on more than forty hours of interviews with former members of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, Scott and Katz-Fishman share the rich story of the League, including the women and students. That story includes the history of the automotive industry in Detroit, the 1967 Detroit Rebellion, and the wildcat strike that sparked the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM).” Learn more here.

David Conrad-Pérez discusses his book Fire in the Heart of the City: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and the Origins of Modern Charity. Per the Seminary Co-Op’s page, the book is about “how New York’s elite claimed authority over social welfare in the wake of the Triangle Shirtwaist Tragedy.” He will be joined by professor and community organizer Bill Ayers. A Q&A session and signing follows.

Chicago Style Politics: Noteworthy Moments from the City Council Audio Recordings

The Society of Midland Authors, the Chicago Collections Consortium, and Chicago Public Library present a discussion of “the battles within the Chicago City Council through their recordings!” This event is moderated by Paul Durica, director of curation and exhibitions at the Chicago History Museum.  Panelists include former Alderman Dick Simpson and former 49th Ward alderman and Cook County Clerk David Orr. Recordings are sourced from the Chicago City Clerk office’s audio archive of Chicago City Council meetings. Recordings featuring Mayors Richard J. Daley, Harold Washington, and Eugene Sawyer will be played and accompanied by images from Chicago Public Library’s Special Collections Unit. Learn more here.
