Traffic was backed up for miles after a semi-truck struck a bridge over I-88 in the western suburbs of Chicago at the start of the afternoon rush hour on Thursday.
Around 1:50 p.m., Illinois State Police officers responded to a three-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck. ISP said the semi-truck struck a bridge in the area during the crash.
One person was taken to a local hospital with injuries, police said. Several traffic lanes were shut down around 2 p.m. as authorities responded to the scene, with all lanes blocked for just under two hours as traffic got by on the shoulder, police said.
Around 4 p.m., aerial video captured by NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed all but one of the westbound lanes of I-88 were shut down after the crash that appeared to involve a bridge carrying railroad tracks over the interstate.
Crews could be seen working at the scene as hundreds of drivers sat in snarled traffic that backed up from near Eola Road in Aurora to North Washington Street in Naperville.
Delays of up to an hour were expected as of 4 p.m., according to Total Traffic. However, around 4:20 p.m., all lanes were reopened, ISP said.
No additional information was immediately available.
