CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A 12-year-old student at Argyle Elementary School was arrested after writing a threatening note containing the names of several students and staff members, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.
A classmate seated near the student saw the note, which the sheriff’s office described as a “Death Note,” being written and immediately told a teacher. The student then threw the note in a trash can.
The sheriff’s office said the teacher retrieved the note and alerted school administrators and the school resource officer.
The sheriff’s office, working with Clay County District Schools, identified and interviewed the student, who was arrested and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice’s Duval County Detention Center, officials said. The student also faces discipline under the district’s Student Code of Conduct.
The student was charged under Florida Statute 836.10(2), which makes it a crime to send, post or transmit a written or electronic threat to kill or harm another person, or to threaten a mass shooting or act of terrorism.
The sheriff’s office praised the student who reported the note, saying the incident underscores the importance of speaking up about concerning behavior.
Officials urged residents to report threats or suspicious activity at schools through the FortifyFL or SaferWatch apps, or by calling the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (904) 264-6512.
