Republicans are holding their first ever midterm convention in Dallas next week. Democrats are looking to spoil the party.
The two-day event comes as Republicans fight to retain their razor thin majority in the House of Representatives, while also fighting to keep control of the Senate amid President Donald Trump’s low approval ratings.
The convention will feature speeches by Trump and Vice President JD Vance and will be attended by top party leadership.
“We are excited to be in Dallas for a first-of-its-kind midterm convention that will show the American people exactly what’s at stake in November,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said in a release.
More than a dozen organizations have set rallies in Dallas while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., announced that some Democrats will head to the city to present a contrast between the two parties, the Hill reported.
Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colorado, one of the Democrats headed to Dallas for counterprogramming, said the convention shows how out of touch Republicans are.
“Americans are being crushed by rising costs,” Crow said on X.
“Republicans don’t care — they’re in Dallas, celebrating an out of touch President whose tariffs and wars are making things worse.
“We’re going to hold them accountable,” Crow said.
Other Democrats attending include Reps. Robert Garcia, Calif., Madeline Dean, Pa. and Sydney Kamiager-Dove, Calif.
“While swing seat House Republicans try to hide from their record of raising costs on working families, gutting Medicaid to fund tax breaks for billionaire donors, and supporting a reckless war of choice in Iran, House Democrats will be present to hold them accountable,” Jeffries said.
James Talarico, the Democrat nominee for Senate in Texas, is planning to counterprogram the event with a “Love Thy Neighbor” statewide food drive.
“Next week, billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians will gather at a convention in Dallas to clink champagne glasses and toast their own corruption,” Talarico said in a release. “We’ll be doing something different.”
