Eugene Leroy Haner passed on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, at the age of 84, In Arlington. Born on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1942, in Elmira, New York to Harold Maxwell Haner and Ruth Inora Sayre. Gene was raised in Smithtown, Long Island, New York where he spent his early years. In 1962 Gene graduated From Smithtown Highschool, he then went on to join the Airforce, where he served from 1963 to 1966 as an air traffic controller in Okinawa Japan. As a youngster he trained racehorses and always had a deep appreciation for them in his life. In his early career, Gene won awards at Volkswagen for his hard work as a salesperson. After his employment at Volkswagen, he worked at Hayes and Haner Motor Co. where he was employed for more than 40 years. Gene wore many hats, even owning and running his own business later in life. He married his beloved Monia Duckett Fennell in 2001. An avid golfer, Gene loving spending time on the Green and was very proud of his “hole in one.” He enjoyed watching and rooting for the Dallas cowboys and loved John Wayne Westerns. His family and friends will always remember him as a soul winner and fisher of men, someone who loved children, a loving husband, father, and friend. He was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church in Arlington. He is preceded in death by his father Harold Maxwell Haner and Mother Ruth Inora Sayre.
