Louisiana toddler featured in Times Square in New York
NEW YORK —
A Metairie family is heading to New York City this weekend to celebrate their toddler, whose photo will be featured in a Times Square presentation by the National Down Syndrome Society.
Richard Duran was selected from over 2,700 applicants worldwide to be one of 500 individuals featured in the annual presentation.
“They have chosen 500 individuals with Down syndrome across the world. I believe over 2,700 applicants, so out of the 500, Richard was chosen,” said Tamra Roney, Richard’s mom.
Richard’s photo, taken by his mother during the summer, will be displayed on the iconic big screens in Times Square.
“I went outside in my front yard, picked this outfit up from Target, and just shot him this summer. We submitted it that night and a couple weeks later got the email that he had been selected,” said Roney.
Richard’s mom, dad, and three older siblings will witness the moment in person.
“I get the question, ‘How different is Richard from your other kids?’ No different. He wants Mrs. Rachel and snacks and he gets into everything. So, life isn’t going to look that much different,” said Roney.
As they count down the days to their trip, the family is looking forward to the unforgettable memories the weekend will bring.
“I’m going to be honest, I’ll probably cry, just because there are so many individuals with Down syndrome that deserve this, and I just feel so lucky that we just get to be a part of it,” said Roney.
The video presentation will kick off the New York City Buddy Walk, which Richard’s family will also participate in.
The event is set to take place this Saturday.
