HOUSTON — A knife-wielding patient in the emergency room of a hospital was shot multiple times after struggling with security guards, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said it happened at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center on Saturday night.
According to HPD, a man in his early 30s experiencing a mental health crisis was admitted to the hospital and taken to a secluded room in the back of the emergency room at around 6 p.m.
Shortly before 9 p.m., HPD said the man presented a knife and refused to put it down, according to hospital security.
HPD said that at least three security guards tried to talk the patient into putting the knife down, but that he refused.

Guards said that when the patient became uncooperative, they used tasers on him to get the knife away from him, according to HPD.
HPD said that the suspect did go down after being shocked, but eventually got back up and reached for the knife again.

That’s when, according to HPD, one of the guards shot the man multiple times in the torso.
After being shot, the suspect immediately received medical treatment, according to HPD.
HPD said it is investigating the shooting.
In a statement, Memorial Hermann said the following:
“The safety and privacy of our workforce, patients and visitors are our top priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation and, due to patient privacy laws, cannot comment further at this time.”
