Pursuit ends in deadly Highway 50 shooting in Sacramento County involving multiple law enforcement agencies

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. —
Officers from three separate law enforcement agencies shot at a driver after a pursuit that ended along Highway 50 on Tuesday morning in Sacramento County, the California Highway Patrol said. The confrontation left the driver dead.
As a result of the shooting that happened on Highway 50 near Hazel Avenue, westbound lanes are expected to be closed for several hours from Hazel to Sunrise Boulevard.
CHP said its officers stopped a vehicle that had its headlights off around 11:20 p.m. Monday on Folsom Boulevard. The driver initially stopped but then took off. This led to a pursuit through the Rancho Cordova and Fair Oaks areas, CHP said.
Other agencies joined the pursuit, which ended around 12:05 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 50 at Hazel Avenue after officers used spike strips to stop the vehicle.
The vehicle stopped, and the driver got out with what appeared to be a gun in their hand, CHP said. That’s when officers from CHP, the Citrus Heights Police and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office opened fire and shot the driver, CHP said.
First responders rendered aid on scene, and the driver was taken to the hospital, where they died, officers said. The driver’s identity was not released.
It’s unclear if a weapon was recovered.
Details were not released on how many officers fired their weapons. Because the shooting involved officers from three separate agencies, multiple mobile command units are at the shooting scene.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said no officers or deputies were injured in connection with the shooting.
Shooting impacts on Highway 50 commute
The westbound side of Highway 50 is closed while law enforcement investigates the shooting. There is no estimated time of reopening, but drivers should expect the closure to last for several hours.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area, find other ways around the closure and prepare for delays throughout the morning commute.
