Rematch

It has been less than two weeks since New York City FC and the New England Revolution met in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The two teams played to an entertaining 1-1 draw, and they will now reunite in the World’s Borough for what promises to be another compelling contest. The Revolution sit eight points ahead of the Boys in Blue, making the opportunity to close that gap extra motivation for a team determined to strengthen its position in the playoff race.

New England have experienced contrasting fortunes since that meeting. A 3-1 road win over Columbus was followed by a narrow defeat to the LA Galaxy last time out. The Revolution will be eager to return to winning ways, while the Boys in Blue will look to end a run of three consecutive draws with a victory over the Revs.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen will miss the game while attending to a personal matter in Europe. Mehdi Ballouchy will take charge in his place, supported by a staff that will have completed extensive preparation ahead of the contest and will be confident of securing three points at Citi Field.

History

These two teams share a special history, particularly when the fixture takes place in New York City.

The historic 2015 home opener saw New York City FC face the Revolution, with the hosts securing their first MLS victory in the process. You can read about that day here.

There have been few blowouts between the two teams in MLS. The Boys in Blue have won three of the last five meetings, but none by a margin greater than two goals. You have to go back to 2022 to find the last time New York City FC scored more than twice against the Revolution in a single game. Coincidentally, that was also the last time New England managed the feat, defeating the Boys in Blue 3-0 at home.

The last time New York City FC hosted the Revs, the Boys in Blue recorded a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Julián Fernández and Alonso Martínez. The hope will be that a similar result can be secured Wednesday night.
