The deer hunting season will begin in just a couple of months here in New York State and the licenses are being sent in the mail to those with lifetime licenses!
The fall is still more than eight weeks away and the summer sunshine and heat are still blazing. However, the whitetail deer are growing their racks and the fawns are growing fast!
If you love to hunt, there is a good chance that you also have been checking those trail cameras hoping to see a good buck or a good amount of deer moving through the woods that you plan to hunt in this year.
Every now and again, those of us who have cameras set up will see a bear, a turkey or even a pair of fawns show up. However, this doe that walked by a camera that is set on a tree in Western New York was something that many have never seen and the owner of the property calls it the “Freak”.
According to what I have found, this deer is likely covered with “deer warts”. “Growths found on the skin of white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family are called fibromas, or “deer warts”. These ugly looking lumps are caused by a virus and can be found on all areas of the body, the most common locations being the head, neck, and forelegs”.
This week, New York State has been sending out the Lifetime and Sportsman Licenses to residents across the state. The general on sale date is coming up in August for those who want to buy a license.
I have been seeing a good deal of decent bucks wandering the woods this summer and quite a few fawns! I have also seen more bear movement in the summer than in previous years. Once we get past the hot weather and the cooler nights move in, it will be interesting to see what sort of activity we capture on the cameras.
