As the summer heat increases, Dallas County reminds residents without air conditioning that they can apply for a free window unit through a county program.
Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Philip Huang said the program aims to provide vital relief and prevent heat-related illnesses for the country’s most vulnerable population.
“As we head into the peak of summer, access to cooling is not just a comfort, but a critical health need,” said Huang. “This program is designed to protect our seniors, families with young children, and residents with disabilities who are most susceptible to the dangers of extreme heat. We urge all who qualify to apply.”
The program provides the AC unit and includes the installation. This direct assistance will help create safer indoor environments as temperatures continue to rise.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Low-income Dallas County residents.
- Homes with no working air conditioning.
- Priority is given to households with:
- Senior citizens (60 years of age and older)
- People with disabilities
- Households with children aged 5 years and younger
Dallas County residents who meet the eligibility requirements or have special circumstances can call 214-819-1909 to apply for the program.
DCHHS said they are committed to ensuring the health and safety of all Dallas County residents. This program is part of a broader effort to mitigate the impact of extreme weather on public health.
