It’s probably a matter of time before Leatherface revs the chainsaw back up in another Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, and there have been some rumors swirling about where the franchise will be going next. One rumor was that filmmaker JT Mollner was looking to team up with Glen Powell on a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, and there may actually be some truth to the claims.

Mollner was present at San Diego Comic-Con where he was joined by his producing partner, Roy Lee, for an interview with The Mary Sue about their new film, The Long Walk. Given the rumors, Mollner was directly asked how he felt about the idea of taking on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre project. While the director confirmed that he knows Powell, and that they’ve had talks about possibly working together, he largely dismissed the rumors.

Kane Hodder admits to being truly afraid of another terrifying horror character and the actor who played him.

“It feels very good regardless of whether any of those rumors are true, it’s really nice because, wow, people would like to see my version of that,” Mollner said, notably stopping short of outright confirming or denying the rumors. “My company used to be called No Remake Pictures. It’s now called Electric Lady just in case, to keep my mind open. But I don’t like the idea of remaking movies that I think are perfect. And I will say that I do think Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect horror film.”

Mollner continued, “But yeah, you know, Glen [Powell] is a tremendous actor and one of the first real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it. And I was excited about his work. And so I do know him and I met him, and it was a really cool meeting, and I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.”

Mollner gave Lee a telling look while mentioning the “strange” rumors. Possibly, he was playing coy and being careful about what to say. Lee then followed up with a comment that seems to lend some credence to the rumors. While Lee isn’t saying exactly what’s happening behind the scenes, he confirmed that the rumors do have some “validity” to them.

As Lee noted, “Well, there is some validity to it and we’re still in discussions, but nothing that’s concrete just yet.”

“Yeah, I figured I’d just let Roy talk,” Mollner added. “I’m being really careful.”

The Franchise Was Based on a Horrific True Story

Inspired by the real-life crimes of murderer and grave robber Ed Gein, the franchise kicked off with the 1974 release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The film told the story of a group of youths falling victim to a family of cannibals while traveling through Texas. The movie spawned a variety of follow-up films, though the original is still the most revered.

The last movie of the franchise, 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was released directly to streaming on Netflix.
