A Chicago suburb has been named one of the safest in the country in a new ranking.
The list of safest U.S. suburbs, which came from financial planning company SmartAsset, included the Chicago area’s Highland Park at No. 14. Several other Midwest suburbs also made the cut.
The ranking looked at 360 U.S. towns within 45 minutes driving distance of a major U.S. city and evaluated them on rates of violent crime, property crime, drug overdoses, traffic deaths and excessive drinking. Housing affordability and local incomes were also considered, according to the ranking.
Indiana also saw numerous suburbs make the top 20 cut, including Noblesville, Fishers, Carmel and Brownsburg.
While it didn’t make the top 20, Scottsburg, Indiana, was noted for being the only with no reported violent crimes and only 10 property crimes for its 7,338 residents. Separately, Canal Winchester, Ohio, was cited as having the second-lowest rate of violent crime and the lowest rate for property crime overall.
Des Moines, Iowa, suburbs were noted for having the lowest rate of drug overdose deaths.
The latest study follows another recent ranking in which three Chicago suburbs were named among the wealthiest in the U.S.
